Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

According to the Chicago Residential Landlord and Tenant Ordinance (commonly known as RLTO), the City of Chicago  requires at least one smoke detector and one carbon monoxide detector in each residential unit. In the case of a central boiler system, one carbon monoxide detector by the boiler is required.

The RLTO further states that the tenant shall provide and maintain a working battery in all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors within the unit. However, as a Landlord it is in your best interest to provide basic upkeep of your rental property and advisable that you perform an annual test of all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

When it comes to tenants, always consult the RLTO ordinance before acting.  Check out our website to review the City of Chicago Residential Landlord and Tenant Ordinance Summary along with other helpful landlord information.
